Independence. It is an admirable
quality. Most of the time. When it comes to exercise, getting
a little guidance more often is better. New Roads Chiropractic Center is equipped
to be your guide! New Roads back pain sufferers can count
on New Roads Chiropractic Center to assemble, demonstrate and supervise
a pain-relieving exercise routine
specially for you!
BENEFIT OF SUPERVISED EXERCISE
Research demonstrates that supervised exercise
therapy produces significant symptom relief and improved
quality of life for patients with intermittent claudication by increasing
maximal walking distance in just 90 days. Sadly, it’s not used enough.
Home based exercise therapy with observation tools like a
pedometer or logbook and walking are other valuable alternatives
to supervised exercise, allowing a bit more of the preferred independence.
(1) New Roads back pain patients may benefit in the same way these back
pain sufferers do. Spinal stenosis back pain patients would appreciate
walking more in such a way!
MORE REGULAR SUPERVISED SESSIONS BENEFICIAL
A newer study reports that
supervised physical therapy for lumbar spinal stenosis patients gave
significant short-term improvements in symptom severity, walking distance,
pain, physical activity and function compared with
unsupervised. (2) A follow-up study evaluated a more specific
schedule of supervised physical therapy visits – twice a week
and once weekly - to home exercise. It reports
specifically that 6 weeks of supervised physical therapy two times weekly for lumbar spinal stenosis patients provided
significant short term improvements in the severity of symptoms, physical
function, back and leg pain and gait disturbance rather than
one time a week PT visits and home exercise alone.
(3) Our New Roads back pain patients would welcome all these
improvements, undoubtedly!
EXERCISE AS PART OF AN OVERALL BACK PAIN RELIEF TREATMENT
PLAN
Improvement is the goal for back
pain management. Independence only gets you so far when dealing
with back pain. There’s always a
tipping point when the pain just can’t be dealt with
any longer! Then a visit to the doctor is arranged.
Many articles are written about how the doctor seen first often sets the course for subsequent
care. (That was the subject of another blog!) Concerning
exercise and physical therapy for back pain, though, these are conservative
management forms that are often too infrequently used while opioid
prescriptions are most ordinarly in the year before elective
lumbar spine surgery: 84.4% opioid prescription and 14.6% minimum of 6 exercise
therapy visits. (4) New Roads Chiropractic Center is honored to be chosen for back pain relief. Your New Roads chiropractor is
a well-trained New Roads back pain specialist
whose treatment plan includes the Cox® Technic System of
Spinal Pain Management and exercise.
